Westside is a comedy crime drama television show created by Rachel Lang and James Griffin for South Pacific Pictures. It is a prequel to Outrageous Fortune, and follows the lives of the West family in the 1970s and 80s.
The first series of the show premiered May 31, 2015 on TV3 and had six episodes each set in a different year, from 1974 to 1979. Each episode featured a historical event that was intertwined in the story. The show was renewed for a second series consisting of ten episodes, which aired in 2016. Unlike the previous series, the entirety of series two was set in 1981, with the Springbok tour as the historical backdrop.
Rachel Lang initially got the idea for Westside when she was looking for a local historical criminal event to base a new series on. She happened upon a picture of the late Frank Whitten, who played Ted in Outrageous Fortune, and thought it would be cool to do a show about young Ted.
Outrageous Fortune Edit
Westside features many characters and events alluded to in Outrageous Fortune and expands on the history of the West family, with Westside showing the younger incarnations of the characters in Outrageous Fortune.
Many of the cast and crew from Outrageous Fortune have been brought back for Westside. Antonia Prebble previously played Rita's granddaughter Loretta West in Outrageous Fortune. Dave Fane and John Leigh, who portrayed Falani and Sparky in Outrageous Fortune, appeared in one-episode cameos as the fathers of their characters' younger incarnation.
