Steve was career criminal Bilkey van Heeder's boyfriend. The two met in a restaurant and Steve instantly knew he was gay, and tracked him down in the bogs and Bilkey took him home. They were in a hidden relationship and would jet off to Sydney together as it offered them more freedom in their relationship.
Steve was up-front about who he was and didn't care who knew about his sexuality. He wanted to be more involved in Bilkey's life and would ask to be introduced to his gang, but Bilkey said it would never happen as he knew they would not accept his homosexuality.
